Courthouse Tours

Courthouse Tour Information and Scheduling

We are pleased to offer guided courthouse tours designed for school-aged children (all grades). The courthouse is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, but tours are only available Tuesday through Friday to avoid the high traffic of Monday court sessions.

Best Age Group for Tours

Courthouse tours are best suited for 4th grade and up, as students at this level typically have the attention span and foundational understanding of government, civics, and history to fully engage with the experience. They are better able to participate in discussions, observe court proceedings, and grasp the roles of legal professionals.

Younger grades are welcome, but due to the complexity of court operations and the unpredictability of live proceedings, we encourage teachers or group leaders of younger students to reach out to Court Administration to discuss alternative arrangements or modified tours.

Scheduling & Availability

  • Tours are available Tuesday through Friday to ensure a smooth experience.
  • Let us know how much time you have! We can adjust the length of the tour to fit your schedule.
  • Group sizes should be between 12 and 70 children. Larger groups will be split into smaller groups to ensure everyone can fit inside a courtroom comfortably.

Chaperone Requirements

To maintain a safe and organized tour, the following minimum number of chaperones is required:

  • 12–20 students → At least 2 chaperones
  • 21–35 students → At least 4 chaperones
  • 36–50 students → At least 6 chaperones
  • 51–70 students → At least 8 chaperones

Chaperones are expected to help maintain order, assist with transitions between activities, and ensure a respectful learning environment.

What’s Included in a Tour?

Your tour may feature engaging opportunities such as:

  • An interactive Q&A session with a judge, offering insight into the judicial process.
  • A chance to observe live court proceedings, experiencing the legal system in action.
  • A meet-and-greet with a sheriff’s deputy and their K-9 partner, learning about law enforcement’s role in the courts.
  • Informative presentations from various courthouse departments, highlighting their roles in supporting the justice system.

Additionally, depending on the age of the children, some court proceedings may not be suitable for younger audiences. As court schedules vary daily, we cannot guarantee what proceedings will be occurring during your visit. If there are any concerns, we encourage you to reach out in advance to discuss the best options for your group.
